2 Great ways to season your clay pot:

You know how they say “Love them and they’ll love you back”? Well, it’s true for your clay pots and pans as well. If you use your clay cookware properly and care for your pots correctly, they will give you a lifetime of fantastic cooking. Apart from cleaning your pots with the right solution and storing them properly, when it comes to pure clay cookware, a very important step needs to be made first and that’s seasoning. Seasoning a pure clay pot ensures its strength and longevity.

Method 1: For pots that will be used in the oven only — Any seasoning process involves soaking the pot in water, so immerse the pot into water and let it soak for about an hour. Take it out of the water, wipe it dry then rub it with a clove of cut garlic again and fill it 3 quarters with water and place it in the cold oven. Turn the oven on and set it for 225 degrees. When the temperature is achieved, all you have to do is leave the pot inside for about 2 hours. After that, turn the oven off, but don’t take the pot out just yet. Let it cool inside the oven.  Take it out of the oven, pour the water out and dry the pot and you can now use it for cooking.

Method 2: For pots that can be used on the stovetop and in the oven — Rinse the pot and lid under running water for a few minutes and set it aside for 10 minutes. Meanwhile make the following mixture: Add 3 tbsp. of flour to 1 cup of water.  You can use any one of the following: wheat, rice, arrowroot, flour etc., Stir thoroughly so it’s without lumps.

Now fill your pot 1/4 up with water, add the flour mixture, stir and place it on the stove and start on low.  Let it stay at this heat for 5-7 minutes then increase to medium heat.  Cook with the lid on till it thickens to a broth. Turn stove off and wait for it to cool down completely then pour broth out, rinse the pot with water and start cooking!

Whichever method you choose for seasoning your clay pot, it’s important to do so if you plan to use your clay cookware on stove top. As said, this will strengthen the pot and allow you to use it for many, many years to come, helping you cook fantastic meals, which are not just delicious, but also very healthy.
