Comparing different types of insulation methods

Insulation is the main feature that contributes to the comfort and energy efficiency of the home. In the absence of proper coating, you have to rely on heating and cooling devices. The disadvantage of resorting to these devices is that they have to work harder and the consume electricity, gas or oil. This means that you will have to pay more for the utility bills. While there are various methods of insulating your home, not all of them are effective as foam insulation.

 

The limitations of fiberglass insulation

Although fiberglass insulation is a lot cheaper than spray foam, it is not near as effective. Spray foam is currently less popular on the market, but things are starting to change. In order to slow down the transfer of heat, the glass fibers trap the air bubbles which ultimately create an insulating effect. Despite the fact that fiberglass is the most common form of protecting the home it is susceptible to air leakage.

The reason for this is that the material allows the air to pass through. It is estimated that more than 30% of heat and air conditioning escapes when fiberglass coating is applied. In extremely cold weather conditions, fiberglass loses heat at an alarming rate, not to mention that it does not provide structural integrity.

Yet another case: cellulose

Cellulose has a high R-value, more precisely 3.6 of 3.8 per inch resistance to heat flow. While this is a very good value, it is not the best. Another point to consider is that it may be difficult to find installers that have experience with cellulose insulation. Only an experienced installer knows how to apply cellulose on surface and the time it takes the spray cellulose to dry. Equally important is remembering that you should contact the city to see if they approve this type of insulation. Cellulose and non-batt coatings pose many difficulties since the many codes do not allow them.

Another disadvantage of using cellulose coating is that it will create too much dust. Inadequate seals around fixtures and tiny holes let large quantities of dust in. If you have health problems such as asthma or even allergies, then you should avoid protecting your home with cellulose.

The winner: foam coating    

In order to prevent the loss of heat, specialists use spray foam that contains polyurethane and a liquid agent. Once it is sprayed to the surface, it fills the vacant air gaps. Compared to other types of insulation methods, spray foam has an R-value of 6.0 per inch. Not only does it have a high resistance to heat flow, but it also maintains this resistance over its lifetime More precisely, the foaming agent acts as a barrier against cold since it does not allow the cold air to penetrate the inside of your home.

Besides preventing the cold air to get in, the spray is also useful for keeping moisture and vapor outside. Adding strength to your building is just as important. Foam spray lasts forever, it keeps dust and pollen out, and it requires less maintenance from your behalf.
